Postdoctoral Fellows

Those interested in postdoctoral work should forward their CV and area of interest to Dr. Dennis at least 6 months in advance of the intended start date to determine if postdocs are being accepted for the following year and to ensure enough time to apply for external funding.

Doctoral Students

Those interested in pursuing PhD studies should forward their CV and areas of interest to Dr. Dennis in advance of the application deadline to determine if students are being accepted for the following year and whether there is a good fit between the research interests of the applicant and Dr. Dennis.  Please note that characteristics of successful applicants to the Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing PhD program include an “A” standing in the master’s program, excellent references attesting to research potential, a CV demonstrating evidence of scholarship and research ability.

RESEARCH ASSISTANT POSITION – For New Mothers New Country Study

The successful applicants will assist in the recruitment of immigrant Chinese participants for the  New Mothers New Country Study.

Specific duties include but are not limited to:

  • communicating with immigrant, Chinese mothers who contact us about the study or are referred to us by healthcare professionals and community centres
  • explaining study details, assessing eligibility, obtaining consent and baseline information from eligible participants;
  • conducting telephone follow-up reminder calls and interviews at 3-, 6-, and 12-month postpartum;
  • entering data electronically, ensuring accuracy and completeness of information;
  • telephone calls as needed to make contact with women in the busy postpartum period;
  • assisting study Recruiter in the distribution of study advertisements across targeted locations, Chinese newspapers and ongoing tracking of these efforts;
  • participating in all study training required; and
  • other research and administrative tasks as needed.

 Anticipated Work Schedule:

  • up to 10 hours per week, depending on rate of recruitment
  • ongoing for another year

** Required Language Ability: Proficiency in spoken and written English; fluency in Cantonese and/or Mandarin; and ability to read simplified/standard and/or traditional Chinese.

Other Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing, social work, or other health, social science-related field
  • Flexibility in timing of work hours to facilitate contact with study participants via telephone (may include evenings and weekends)
  • Personal access to a telephone and high-speed internet/email access
  • Culturally sensitive to immigrant, Chinese community. Tact and confidentiality. Knowledge of research process. Meticulous attention to detail and problem-solving skills. Demonstrated time management and organizational skills. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Comfortable working within a multidisciplinary setting. Familiarity with Microsoft Access would be an asset, but not required. Previous research assistant or recruitment experience an asset.

Term: Casual, part-time position with 1 year contract, possibility of renewal

Salary: $23.62/hour
